In case you are not aware, the BC Government is seeking input on potential liquor law reforms. The last full review of Liquor Laws in the Province was in 1999 and public input was not sought. So this is the very first time that you have the opportunity to have a direct say. In the last term some significant modernization (like BYOB) was undertaken so the Government has demonstrated it’s willingness to undertake change. Bowen fundraising organisations should be concerned as there are many restrictions today on how alcohol is used in fundraising.

I am interested in learning what you think should be changed so even if you choose not to submit anything directly, please let me know and I will consolidate in our submission.

If you would like to see changes in any aspect of when, where and what you drink then this is a key time to voice your opinion. The Government website is at Apparently, there will be a section for public comment being made available but it is not yet up.
Deadline for submissions is September 30. The Government is expecting to receive recommendations from it’s sub-committee headed by Suzanne Anton at the end of October so time is of the essence.
You can submit via email to the MLA charged with gathering input John Yap (Richmond) at
or Twitter @john_yap

Bowen Children’s Centre (BCC) is holding a wine tasting at Artisan Eats cafe Thursday May 3, 2012 from 7-9pm.

The event features a guided tasting by BC`s 8th Generation winery. A flight of 7 wines from their selection will be served along with cheeses provided by Artisan Eats.

8th Generation are one my favourite BC wineries so this is an event well worth attending. You will also be able to order the wines at winery price at the event and pick them up from us later.

From all of us at the Bowen Island Beer and Wine Cellar we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

We’re finally ready to move! We’ll be closed from 7pm Sunday June 5 through Tuesday June 7. Doors open at new store 11am June 8.

It’s easy to find us – just look right from old store and we’re opposite next to Qui Café and under the Ruddy Potato, facing onto Dorman Road. Parking is available outside or feel free to use the pub car park opposite.

First event is Saturday June 11, “Bubbles on Bowen” (see next post)

All systems are gradually turning GREEN. Looks like opening the new store either on Wednesday June 1 or Wednesday June 8. Whichever week it turns out to be we will close early on the preceding Sunday and for all of Monday/Tuesday that week to make the move. Will advise as we firm up on this.

Update: All was looking good for our late March opening but “the best laid plans of mice and men are apt to go awry”…

The new cooler doors arrived last Monday. These were the last of the long-lead items we were waiting for. Custom made to match the cooler doors from the existing store – EXCEPT, the new doors were too short and too narrow!! So, the doors have been sent back and we have to wait 8 weeks for the correct set.

Looks like we are now targeting late March for the move across the road.

  • External work of regrading sidewalk and installation of scissor lift is done.
  • Internal reconfiguration of space is complete, drywall and sprinkler systems are in.
  • Waiting for arrival of new cooler doors so construction of coolers can get underway. We are going from 10 coolers to 18. High level view of additional cooler space is 3 extra white wine/sparkling sections, 4 beer, 1 cider/coolers/soft drinks. Plan is to add a lot of new craft beers (esp. from BC and in single bottle format). There will also be more mass market beers, but focus is definitely on the craft ones.
  • A move will likely happen as follows. Close early on a Sunday night, closed Monday all day, reopen Tuesday as normal (11-11pm) on either the third or last weekend of the month.
